God is important. And most who have been walking in the Christian faith for a while know that it is important to keep God as a priority. However, life gets busy, you get distracted, time gets away from you. Sometimes it’s the end of the day by the time you can breathe and relax. Trust me, the Lord knows all of this. Yet, that doesn’t mean it is okay to put Him on the backburner. We have to keep God a priority and there are many ways to do that and grow in that, but I just want to touch on one, starting your day with God.
God has given us all the same twenty-four hours in a day and sometimes it feels like even less, am I right? But even if you feel like you don’t have enough time to sit and chat with God for three or four hours, you can make time for Him. The easiest way to do this is to start your day with Him. Before you pick up your phone, before you check the weather or hop in the shower. Before you drink your coffee or get dressed for work, have a little talk with Jesus.
Why?
Well, because how our day starts is usually how it ends. Have you ever noticed that something frustrating can happen at the beginning of the day, say you spill coffee on your new shirt, and then you’re agitated the rest of the day? That’s no coincidence. The start of our day influences our emotions and outlook for the entire day. When you start your day with the Lord (hopefully giving thanks and not complaining) then your outlook typically tends to be more hopeful. At the end of the day, you can say it was a good day even though bad things may have happened throughout the day. Does that make sense? Let me know!
Starting our day with the Father gives us the right foundation. And if you’re praying and listening, it bolsters you up to face whatever challenges are on the way.
Some Ideas To Try:
- Thank Him for another day. He didn’t have to give it to you!
- Invite God into your day. Ask the Lord to be present in your day and to speak to you throughout the day. And then be open to hearing from Him when He speaks!
- Read the Word. A scripture or a passage a day helps more than you know. But don’t just read it to check it off of your to-do list! Read it and think of how it applies to you personally. And then keep it somewhere (whether on a post-it or in your phone) and reread it throughout the day. You can use lunch breaks or right when you’re getting in and out of your car. You can reread it sporadically, but meditate on it. This helps you to internalize it and apply the Word to your life.
- Pray over other people in your life. Did you know that when we intercede for others, we’re also boosting our own faith? Pray for healing and close walks with God. Pray over the areas that you see your loved ones needing help in, even if they never asked you to pray. Pray and watch God work miracles! And be encouraged because God is pleased when we edify each other.
- Listen to worship music. Praise and worship ushers in the presence of God!
- Do a combination of these or all of them!
We cannot neglect the Lord. And too often we do thinking that we’ll have time later. You don’t know that to be true. Furthermore, the Father shouldn’t be your last resort or your second-string draft pick (for those more sports-minded). Even if it is only five minutes, try to spend the first few minutes of your day with the Lord. I challenge you to do it for a week. When you see the difference, come back here and share! And if there isn’t, share that too. But I’ll be praying you see the change!
